First he was a waiter, then he was a lifeguard, then they saw him selling technology in retail shops, from there he worked as a student warden and now he comes to you as the creator of MyAgilityBoard.com, an accomplished, fast learning computer scientist and software engineer whose work in internet programming can be seen running on Tayside Police’s website.
BSc Honours Applied Computing
2008 – 2012, University of Dundee
With a keen interest in inclusive technology and User Centred Design, I have combined proper Object Oriented Design (OOD) with a knowledge of good Human Computer Interaction (HCI) to create systems that are both well made and intuitive to use as I have been keen to develop systems that are suited to a wide range of users. I therefore take pride in developing systems that are accessable by people who would often not have normal access to computers.
In my time at Dundee’s School of Computing I have developed several prototypes for inclusive technologies including large contributions in the AAC Research Team as part of my honours year. I have gained experience in several programming languages, web server technologies and many elements of software and technology development but I believe the most important skill I have gained is the ability to rapidly learn a new system, whether it be a server, a programming language or computer platform, this is a skill that is invaluable in the workplace for being a dynamic computer scientist and team member.
HNC Information Technology
2007 – 2008, Perth College
As a foundation for my degree in Applied Computing, I pursued an HNC course in IT which gave me great experience in PHP and MySQL Database Design. Having already won an award in 2005 for IT Support Skills (Best City & Guilds Level 2 IT Service Support Technician in UK), I also extended my knowledge through the Microsoft Service Support curriculum.
Experience
Tayside Police – Student Internship – Online Presence Innovator
During the summer of 2011, Tayside Police selected myself from a group of applicants to work to improve their online presence, though unsure of what they wanted, the main pain was that they were struggling to interact with the Tayside community in a growing online world. By learning to work around their complex yet simplified CMS, I was able to create a new database of communties and created an API to run community pages. I also built a Facebook Page and trained the staff how best to engage with the public through this page which now has several thousand daily users.
Secure Web Development and Design
While designing and maintaining my personal website, I also have experience running succesfully Search Engine Optimised sites for businesses such as Katya Embroidery. I also have experience in setting up highly secure e-commerce websites on secure web servers. These skills can be seen used on www.myagilityboard.com
Lab Tutoring
Throughout my time at Dundee’s School of Computing I have given tuition to other students also studying computing, I am often favoured for my patient teaching style.
